The Engine Control Unit (ECU) is the computer in a vehicle that provides the logic that guides such engine-operation factors as fueling ratios & quantities, boost control and ignition timing
The Transmission Control Unit (TCU) is the computer that provides logic guiding such transmission operations as shift points, speeds, clutch management and shift programs.
This refers to Bespoke / Custom-Made tuning, done based on your power-goals & the vehicle’s responsiveness in the respective climate + it’s age-related wear & tear effects.
Stage Tuning refers to tuning categorized by the amount of prerequisite hardware upgrades.
Stage 1 tuning is a software-only ECU/TCU upgrade with Zero (0) hardware upgrades as preprequisites. As such, any hardware upgrades performed while on this stage (outside of a Downpipe upgrade) would be considered as supporting modifications, hence would move the car to a Stage 1+. Stage 1+ tuning is a software tune with induction or fuelling upgrades, but without an Upgraded Downpipe.
Stage 2 tuning requires an upgraded Downpipe as a prerequisite, hence involves handling of the Check-Engine Light (CEL) caused by the Downpipe upgrade so as to avoid the vehicle user having a CEL as a result of the prerequisite Upgrade. Hardware such as upgraded fuelling, intercoolers and other induction parts act as supporting modifications and graduate a user to Stage 2+ / “Long Stage 2” on some platforms. .
Stage 3 tuning definition varies between platforms. It requires upgrade of the engine’s main Induction component (whether Turbocharger, Supercharger or Twincharger), and often also involves upgrade of the engine’s internals to forged components which facilitate higher power production than the factory-accomodating limits. Stage 3 requires fuelling (such as injectors & pumps) as an accompanying upgrade as well as cooling (intercooler / heat-exchanger) modifications, plus other induction upgrade such as upgraded cold air intakes.
